South Carolina GranuFlo Injury Lawyer Fighting For NaturaLyte Dialysis Victims
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Dialysis Concentrates were used for the treatment of renal failure in patients undergoing hemodialysis and have now been recalled by the FDA. These dangerous medical products are now known to cause alarmingly high levels of risk for cardiovascular events, heart attacks and death. Manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care (FMC), drug injury lawyers have discovered evidence that the corporation knew of these risks yet continued to market the products unabated. Our NaturaLyte and GranuFlo lawyers seek to find justice for patients harmed by these products and hold the negligent manufacturer responsible.
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Side Effects Include Death
The concentrates are composed of acetate and sodium diacetate, and inappropriate use of these concentrates may lead to dangerously high levels of serum bicarbonate in patients. The human body maintains a delicate pH balance, and the elevated bicarbonate concentrate will offset this balance and cause negative health conditions. Patients with existing health conditions, including low blood pressure, hypokalemia, hypoxemia, hypercapnia or cardiac arrhythmia are particularly at risk for alarming and fatal side effects.
Elevated bicarbonate levels can lead to a medical condition known as metabolic alkalosis, which can result in:
- Cardiovascular events, including heart attacks
- Cardiopulmonary arrest
FDA Recall on GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Dialysis Concentrates
Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) may have known as early as 2010 that the concentrates were causing an unacceptable high risk of cardiovascular death, but it failed to alter the public or issue a GranuFlo or NaturaLyte warning to innocent patients.
In May of 2012, the FDA issued a NaturaLyte and GranuFlo warning that incorrect or improper use of these concentrates may cause fatal side effects. As the dangerous NaturaLyte and Granuflo side effects were known internally, an anonymous whistleblower alerted the FDA and urged the federal agency to take action.
In June of 2012, the FDA issued a Class I Recall notice, the most serious type of recall, stating that improper use of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Dialysis Concentrates “can lead to a high serum bicarbonate level in patients undergoing hemodialysis,” and “if not appropriately treated, may culminate in cardiopulmonary arrest. This product may cause serious adverse health consequences, including death.”
While this NaturaLyte and Granuflo recall is necessary to prevent future harm and death, it is too late for many patients already injured or family members who needlessly lost a loved one.
