Westminster, Maryland Daycare Facility Facing Lawsuit over E. Coli Outbreak

Westminster, Maryland Daycare Facility Facing Lawsuit over E. Coli OutbreakParents of children who attended Chelsea’s Gentle Care Child Development Center in Westminster, MD have filed a lawsuit alleging that the center is responsible for at least one child, and as many as 23 children, contracting a strain of E. Coli. According to the Town of Morningside Maryland, a “child developed gastrointestinal distress and a fever and later transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital when his condition did not improve. Doctors diagnosed him with hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), a complication of E. coli, according to the lawsuit.” HUS is a form of kidney failure.

  1. Coli bacteria live in your intestines, and most strains are perfectly harmless. Pathogenic strains, however, can lead to serious illnesses. Those strains are:
  • Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). This is the pathogen the child in Westminster developed.
  • Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC)
  • Enteropathogenic Ecoli (EPEC)
  • Enteroaggregative Ecoli (EAEC)
  • Enteroinvasive Ecoli (EIEC)
  • Diffusely adherent E. coli (DAEC)

STEC infections are especially serious for the very young and the elderly, whose bodies are less adept at fighting off infections. If not caught and treated in time, STEC infections can prove fatal.
