Ryan is a personal injury attorney who represents individuals and families across South Carolina in serious injury, wrongful death, and medical malpractice cases. He was drawn to plaintiff-side practice by the opportunity to make a meaningful difference for people navigating some of the most difficult and unfamiliar circumstances of their lives. Ryan understands that, for many clients, a serious injury is also their first experience with the legal system. He believes they deserve an attorney who will not only advocate for them, but also explain the process candidly, answer difficult questions honestly, and make sure they feel heard and understood along the way.

Ryan’s practice is particularly focused on complex medical malpractice litigation. He enjoys the challenge of learning the medicine behind each case, developing a command of the details, and identifying facts that may initially appear insignificant but ultimately prove important. His experience spans claims involving a wide range of medical specialties, including obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, radiology, cardiology, urology, pathology, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, and others. Ryan brings a thoughtful but highly competitive approach to litigation, examining cases from multiple angles and looking for creative ways to strengthen his client’s position. He also believes good advocacy requires judgment: understanding which cases can be won, what a realistic outcome looks like, and communicating that assessment openly with the client.

Before joining McGowan, Hood, Felder & Phillips, LLC, Ryan defended physicians and healthcare providers in complex medical malpractice claims throughout South Carolina. That experience gave him firsthand insight into how insurers evaluate claims, how defense strategies develop, and which facts tend to drive important decisions in litigation. It also reinforced his respect for the people involved on every side of a medical case. Ryan now uses that perspective to anticipate defenses, prepare cases with discipline, and pursue accountability without losing sight of the human beings involved. For him, success is not simply about obtaining a recovery—it is about helping clients understand what happened, pursuing the best achievable outcome, and making sure they feel supported throughout the process.

Beyond the courtroom.

Ryan grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee, in a close-knit family that emphasized hard work, independence, and doing things the right way. He remains close with both his family and many of the friends he grew up with. Ryan knew from an early age that he wanted to pursue law. Naturally analytical and pragmatic, he was drawn to a career that would allow him to solve difficult problems while helping people along the way. He attended Clemson University, where he earned a degree in Psychology, before returning to Tennessee for law school at the University of Tennessee College of Law. During law school, he worked on complex civil and criminal matters and sat second chair during the federal trial of United States v. Anming Hu, an experience that gave him an early appreciation for the preparation, adaptability, and human stakes involved in litigation.

Ryan now lives in Greenville, South Carolina, where he remains close to his Clemson roots and is an avid supporter of Clemson athletics. Outside the office, he enjoys weightlifting, golf, live music, and spending time with friends and family. He also enjoys cooking, particularly Italian dishes based on recipes passed down through his family and has devoted more time than he might admit to perfecting homemade New York-style pizza. A lifelong sports fan, Ryan follows the Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in addition to the Tigers. Baseball is a particular passion: for the past decade, he and his father have traveled together with the goal of visiting all 30 Major League Baseball ballparks, with 24 currently checked off the list. At home, Ryan spends plenty of time with Goose, his golden retriever, who is always willing to play fetch for as long as someone is willing to throw his ball.
