South Carolina DePuy Hip Implant Recall Lawyer Who Fights For Justice

DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, issued a recall of its metal-on-metal line of ASR™ hip implants. The implants have a defective design that causes unacceptable high rates of failure, and many patients will require a second replacement surgery. When dangerous drugs and defective medical devices injure innocent patients, our drug injury attorneys can secure compensation for victims to pay for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, rehabilitation costs and more.

DePuy Hip Implant Implants Causes Metallosis

The defective design of the DePuy ASR™ hip implants cause them to rub together in the body and shed tiny metal particles, which can cause severe injuries in patients. The body reacts to this metal debris as foreign particles, sending the immune system into overdrive. The loose metal ions can cause significant tissue damage in the body, a condition known as metallosis.

DePuy Hip Implant Symptoms of Device Failure

If you have a DePuy or other metal-on-metal hip implant, be aware of the following symptoms that indicate the device is failing:

  • Pain around the site
  • Inflammation, generalized or in the joints (Synovitis)
  • Swelling and abscesses (localized collections of fluid on the body)
  • Skin rash
  • Raised levels of cobalt and/or chromium in the blood

DePuy Hip Implant Warning Led to Voluntarily Recall

In 2005, the FDA approved the ASR device for hip implants through an accelerated program that did not require additional clinical testing. Beginning in 2008, the FDA began receiving hundreds of complaints by patients who required a second surgery to remove and replace the implant.

The FDA issued a warning to DePuy that a new study indicated an unacceptable high failure rate. In August 2010, DePuy issued a recall of the following products:

  • ASR XL Acetabular System (hip socket used in traditional hip replacement)
  • ASR Hip Resurfacing System (partial hip socket, used by implanting a metal cap on the top of the femur)

As the manufacturer issued a full voluntary recall, an FDA recall will not be forthcoming.
