A jury has awarded more than $2 billion to Alva and Alberta Pilliod, a couple in California who claimed that years of using Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer led to them developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Each spouse was awarded $1 billion in punitive damages, as well as a collective $55 million in compensatory damages for them both.
This is the third time a California jury has awarded significant damages in claims against Monsanto. There are more than 13,000 plaintiffs who have filed lawsuits against the company.
Roundup’s links to cancer
Roundup contains an ingredient called glyphosate. In 2014, the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health published a study which found that exposure to herbicides were linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. People who work in agricultural industries – farming, large-scale gardening, commercial landscaping, and so forth – are at greater risk of being exposed to toxic levels of the chemical.
